Some of the languages are disappearing, with only a handful of speakers left. In fact, about a quarter of the world’s languages have fewer than a thousand speakers, and nearly 60 percent of the languages in the world have fewer than ten thousand. Many of those small groups are using their languages quite vigorously, but keeping a language alive is harder when there are fewer people to speak it with and when another language is being picked up and used for communication with outsiders.
