受験英語では病気で死ぬは、die of　病気　と覚えたのですが、実際には、fromもよく使われるようです。語学学習サイトのフォーラムでも議論されていて、それによれば、直接的な死因の場合にはOF、間接的なときはFROMなどと答えている人がいます。タバコの吸いすぎで死んだ場合は、直接的な死因ではないので、He died from smoking.というわけです。ガンで死ぬ場合は、die of cancer , die from cancerのどちらもアリのようです。
