眞子さまとの結婚が内定している小室圭さんがアメリカの大学院に初登校

眞子さまと小室圭さんは納采の儀が執り行われていないため婚約者とは呼べないと宮内庁が周知徹底しているということが先日ニュースになっていましたが、テレビニュースでは、眞子さまとの結婚が「内定している」小室圭さんという報道をしていました。

ところが、女性セブン2018年8月9日号を紹介したネット記事によれば、宮内庁はフォーダム大学に対して、『納采の儀』を行なっていないので小室さんは眞子さまの婚約者ではないとい抗議したそうで、その顛末がニューヨークタイムズ紙に掲載されたとのこと。ニューヨークタイムズの記事の見出しは、

という意味です。ちなみにこの記事では He’s supposed to とアポストロフィーを用いた省略形で書いてあるため、He is supposed to なのかHe was supposed toなのかがわかりません。自分は見出しをみて、過去形だと受け取ったため、ちょっと驚きました。過去形だとしたら、～することになっていたけど、もはやそうではないというかなり否定的な意味になります。記事を読み進めても、自分の疑問は解消しませんでした。意図的に曖昧な表現を使ったのでしょうか？

確かに記事の英語を読むと、本人の意図とずれていますね。
