As Gossip Cop reported, during Trump’s Congress speech, he spoke about the late Ryan Owens, who died during a botched raid in Yemen in January. He led extended applause for Owens’ wife, even saying that her late husband would be happy about breaking the record for the lengthiest standing ovation. While some found it to be an emotional, humanizing moment during the address, others found it inappropriate.
Whoopi Goldberg noted that hours before his speech, Trump “blamed U.S. generals for Ryan’s deaths, saying, ‘They lost Ryan.’ [But] that mission could’ve never happened without presidential approval… Was this a tribute? Or was this damage control?”
Sunny Hostin, who has a close relative who was injured while serving overseas, confessed, “It was something that really struck me about the night.” She explained, “I thought that was so exploitative. I thought he exploited that widow. It was so heartbreaking to me because we know U.S. military officials said to the press that… Obama didn’t approve [of carrying out the mission].”
“When I look at that, I think, my god, how do you exploit the woman who is grieving over the loss of her husband, the father of her children, when you sent him there without the appropriate ground support?” asked Hostin. Jedediah Bila agreed, saying, “When you’re the commander-in-chief, the buck stops with you… You are responsible.”
She went on, “What he should’ve said is, ‘This is my fault, I owe you an apology.’” She also said she’s against people being used as political “props,” and “hated it last night.” Watch below.
